About

Our Mission

South Carolina spends billions every year. That money moves through state agencies, contractor networks, and procurement processes that rarely face sustained independent scrutiny. Whitestone Investigations exists to change that.

This isn’t about access journalism or relationship management. It’s about primary sources: state payment ledgers, court filings, contract records, and Freedom of Information Act requests. We follow the paper, not the press release.

South Carolina’s public money deserves public accountability. That’s the whole operation.

Our Standards

Every claim we publish is rooted in primary documents or on-the-record interviews. Before any story runs, we contact named individuals and agencies for their response. Not because we’re obligated, but because the truth stands better when it’s been tested.

We are not affiliated with any political party, candidate, agency, or company we report on. Whitestone operates as an independent journalism venture, sustained by journalism grants and its operating LLC, never by anyone whose activities we cover.

What We Do

We report on state-government spending, procurement patterns, campaign-finance conflicts, and agency performance. We look at who gets paid what, by whom, and why certain contractors keep winning bids or why certain rules aren’t enforced.

This is investigative reporting in the plainest sense: digging into public records, asking hard questions, and publishing what we find. No speculation. No conspiracy. No sensationalism. Just the work.

Why It Matters

State government is not theoretical. It affects schools, roads, contracts, and how taxpayer money moves. South Carolina’s media ecosystem has historically treated state spending as inevitable background noise, not as accountability journalism territory. Whitestone Investigations fills that gap.
